Hi! I hope that everyone is having a great holiday week… and maybe a few days off from work 🙂
Tonight’s shoot was all about the D3100 and some “studio simplicity” – A VERY inexpensive speedlight, a cable to get it off the camera, a D3100, and (mostly) the 35mm f1.8. Although I couldn’t do everything that I would have done with strobes, many of the photos have “studio goodness” to them.
I grabbed some weights and a bench out of the fitness room and worked on some “fitness model” type poses.
Here’s a couple of samples…

I took advantage of quite a bit of bounce with these shots, as the un-diffused SB-400 straight on can be a little harsh. Most of the shots have the speedlight to the left of the frame. The photos POP OUT of the screen on my Macbook. I am LOVING the D3100 in the studio. As promised, here is Part 2 of my Holiday Shoot. These shots have no brightness, contrast, or color adjustments in Photoshop.
The backdrop in these photos is an eight dollar polyester carpet pad from IKEA!!! When in doubt, use what you have handy!

I love the way that the colors POP in this photo… and this was before I made a minor White Balance adjustment to get everything just right.

Hi! I messed around in the studio a bit today the the D3100. I’ll say it again… GREAT CAMERA! The video above was at ISO 800 and it’s clean and crisp. Amazing!
I tried to get into the Holiday Spirit with a red ribbon… This is a special shoot for my VIP Members (and it’s only Part 1… because I gotta run out and do all of my Christmas shopping!!!!)

I did a one light setup today (I may have cheated and added some fill for one or two shots). You’re seeing D3100 shots here between f8 and F11. I triggered the strobe with the D3100’s popup flash set to manual. The background you’re seeing is seamless paper. It is a lot of fun to work with seamless now that I have hard floors.

Here are two short examples of D3100 videos. I am VERY HAPPY with the video mode.
The first video is under fairly bright daylight but overcast conditions. GRAND CANYON 🙂
The second is under a single incandescent bulb at ISO 3200.
Both of these were captured with the 18-55 VR kit lens. I am EXCITED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES!!!!!!!!

It’s still a crazy week, but I managed to get a video and photo shoot together tonight. YouTube is in “read only” mode at the moment, so I’m not sure when the video will be up, but there are some pretty simple shots of the new floors… oh, and that’s my High School Junior Prom dress in the photos! The classics never get old! These were with the D300s between ISO 800 and 1600, some with available incandescent light and others with the popup flash set to -1.0 EV. The SnapChick studio has not been reassembled yet, but the D300s, cool floors, and the popup flash help keep me going!!! 🙂

Hi! It’s been a LONG week, and I’m just getting to the point that my studio will be set back up shortly. In short, I had to move EVERYTHING out of my house and then back in. It’s still going, but I will have new pictures and videos this week! Keep the email questions coming!
One thing that I DID manage to put together last week is these SnapChick Studio Posters. What are these? What are they for? These posters are about IDEAS and INSPIRATION! Every time that I work with a model/client/photographer, before anything else, we sit and talk about our ideas for our project. No single thing helps this better than looking at images, sometimes a few… sometimes hundreds! Usually, there are one or two images that start the conversation, and then we refine and narrow things down from there.
These posters can help get the conversation started, add some “spice” and style to your studio or work space, and might give you or others ideas on what they are looking for in their project.
In particular, with female models, some will have difficulty saying, “I would like Boudoir Photos.” It is MUCH EASIER for the model to say, “I would like to make photos like this.” There are definitely cases where your Studio Posters can literally get the project started in the right direction.
