The D3100 is a superb camera for either a new DSLR user or a Nikon veteran looking for something lightweight and ready for action. The image quality rivals DSLRs which are many times more expensive. Its use can be expanded far beyond the kit lens, with many of my favorite lenses, such as the 35mm f1.8G and the 70-200 f2.8G.
